This project involved a material level study into glass as a hybrid material. It was centered around two themes, Glass & Nature, and, Glass & Waste Metals.
Glass & Nature explored the way glass interacts and forms using nature based materials, specifically pine tree resin & Kolophonium. Most of the experiments were hotworked and the glass was blown and layered along with the pine tree resin. The material being quite flammable, created large amounts of gas expulsions, that worked & blew the glass into forms. It also created a thin misty film of ash with a stretch mark pattern, that was either white, or iridescent silvery and golden depending on the way the gas was trapped or vented, creating very unique pieces.
Glass and Waste Metals were mainly explored through the process of kiln casting and cold working. The waste metals were typically burrs, offcuts, wires and waste ingots in various elements and alloys. They were casted into clear glass in various forms and quantities and heated to a temperature of 880° C. The metals would either oxidize or melt at these temperatures and create interesting porosities, smoke lines and patterns in the glass, and in some cases impart colour into the glass
